Deutschlandticket

€58/month for unlimited public transport across all of Germany — U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams, and regional trains. The best-value thing you'll subscribe to in Germany.

What it is

The Deutschlandticket (also called the 49-Euro-Ticket, though the price is now €58/month) gives you unlimited travel on all local and regional public transport in Germany:

  • All BVG services in Berlin (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams, ferries)
  • All regional trains (RE, RB) across Germany
  • All local transport in every other German city

It does not cover long-distance ICE/IC trains or high-speed services. For those you still need a separate DB ticket.

Is it worth it?

A single BVG monthly pass for Berlin zones AB costs around €86. The Deutschlandticket costs €58 and covers all of Germany. Yes, it’s worth it.

How to get it

You can buy it from several providers:

BVG (Berlin’s transport authority) — the most straightforward option if you’re already in Berlin. Get it via the BVG app or at any BVG ticket machine or service centre.

Deutsche Bahn — via the DB Navigator app or db.de.

Your employer — many employers offer the Deutschlandticket as a subsidised job ticket (Jobticket). Check with HR — you may get it for less than €58/mo or even free.

Your university — students often get a subsidised version, sometimes included in semester fees.

What you need

  • German IBAN — it’s a monthly subscription billed by direct debit
  • Email address — for account registration

Step by step (BVG)

  1. Download the BVG app or go to bvg.de
  2. Create an account
  3. Select “Deutschlandticket” and enter your payment details
  4. Your ticket is digital — shown in the app. No physical card needed.
  5. It auto-renews monthly. Cancel by the 10th of the month to stop the next month’s charge.

Common mistakes

  • Buying it before you have a German bank account. You need a German IBAN for the direct debit. Get your bank account first.
  • Missing the cancellation deadline. It renews automatically. If you’re leaving Germany, cancel by the 10th of the previous month.
  • Not checking the Jobticket option. If your employer subsidises it, you may pay significantly less.
